The Simple Formula
Calculating panel count requires comparing four numbers:
- Your monthly electricity consumption (units / kWh) — check your KSEB bill
- Your daily usage = monthly units ÷ 30
- Kerala generates roughly 4–4.5 units per day per kW of solar
- So system size (kW) = daily usage ÷ 4.25 (average)
Then: number of panels = system size (kW) × 2 (with 550W panels, each panel = 0.55kW, so ~1.8–2 panels per kW).

Not All Rooftops Are Equal
Even if the table says you need 6 panels, your actual system may differ because of:
- Shade — trees or nearby buildings reduce generation; we account for this in the survey
- Roof orientation — south-facing roofs generate best; east/west roofs need slight adjustment
- Tin vs RCC roof — affects mounting, not panel count directly
- Wiring distance — inverter placement affects cable length but not panel count
Example Calculations
Example 1 — 3BHK home in Kalpetta:
- Monthly bill: ₹3,000 → ~450 units
- Daily usage: 450 ÷ 30 = 15 units
- System size: 15 ÷ 4.25 ≈ 3.5kW → round to 3-4kW
- Panels: 6–8 × 550W
- Roof space: ~160–210 sq ft
Example 2 — Home with AC in Mananthavady:
- Monthly bill: ₹6,000 → ~900 units (AC usage)
- Daily usage: 900 ÷ 30 = 30 units
- System size: 30 ÷ 4.25 ≈ 7kW → 7-8kW system
- Panels: 13–15 × 550W
- Roof space: ~350–410 sq ft
What About the Rainy Season?
Wayanad has a heavy monsoon from June–September. Panels generate less during cloudy weather — roughly 3–3.5 units/day/kW during the monsoon vs 4.5–5 in summer. Because of this, some homes choose a slightly oversized system so the yearly average covers more of their bill.
Net metering helps here: excess summer generation earns credits that offset lower monsoon generation.
